Midjourney V8.2 Personalization: Rate, Profile, Then Lock Taste
MidassAI Team · August 13, 2026 · 3 min read

V8.2’s headline upgrade is not a new parameter—it is how hard Personalization pulls once your profile has real rating mass. Without that profile, you are still rolling a public average taste.
What changed from V7 / V8.1
V8.2 (default since late July 2026) leans bolder and “edgier” by default, and it reads accumulated ratings more faithfully. Profiles you already ranked on V7 still transfer; you can also spin extra V8 profiles for different jobs (product clean, editorial grain, campaign punch).
Do not confuse this with Style Reference (--sref). Personalization biases your long-term taste. Style Reference locks one look for a campaign.
20-minute setup
- Open your Midjourney profile → Personalization (web app).
- Rate image pairs quickly—pick the image you would actually ship, not the louder thumbnail.
- Target at least ~100–200 ratings before judging V8.2; thin profiles under-react.
- Create a named profile per lane (e.g.
brand-muted,social-punch). - In Create, enable the profile or append
--profile <name>on jobs that should inherit it.
When to turn it off
Turn Personalization off for:
- Strict client moodboards already covered by
--sref - A/B tests where you need a neutral baseline
- Character lock work that routes through Omni Reference / V7 (see the V8.2 vs V7 guide)
Prompt stack that plays well with V8.2
Keep subject and camera clear; let the profile handle aesthetic drift:
editorial half-body portrait of a barista, soft window light, 35mm, shallow depth, muted teal shadows --ar 4:5 --profile brand-muted --stylize 150If the profile fights a hard style brief, drop --stylize or disable the profile—do not stack conflicting adjectives.
Decision table
| Goal | Prefer |
|---|---|
| “Always looks like me” | Personalization profile |
| “Match this one campaign deck” | --sref (+ optional --sw) |
| “Same person across shots” | Omni Reference path (often V7 routing) |
| Cheap exploration | Draft mode first, then profile on winners |
Prerequisites and setup
Use the web Create page (personalization and Draft are web-first). Confirm the version picker shows V8.2 unless you intentionally pin --v 8.1 or --v 7. Keep Fast/Relax mode consistent across a rating session so timing does not distract you from taste choices.
Extended workflow
- Baseline without profile — three grids of the same prompt.
- Enable profile — same prompt; note lighting and polish shifts.
- Split profiles — duplicate the prompt with
brand-mutedvssocial-punch. - Promote winners — upscale only after the profile direction is clear.
- Archive the profile name in your MidassAI prompt notes so teammates do not remix the wrong taste lane.
Common mistakes
- Rating for “pretty” instead of “on-brand.” Fix: rate as if you were approving a client deck.
- One global profile for every job. Fix: separate product, portrait, and abstract profiles.
- Blaming the prompt when the profile is thin. Fix: finish ratings before rewriting adjectives.
Try this in MidassAI
Save profile names beside your prompt presets so V8.2 taste stays portable across sessions. Open Midjourney Studio at https://www.midassai.com/studio/mjpro/ and run the same subject with and without your profile before you burn full-quality GPU on a wrong aesthetic.
